2009 MMORPG Games I’m Looking Forward To

July 22nd, 2009 0 Comments

glassesI’ve recently gotten back into gaming quite a bit due to a long stretch of insomnia and now I’m really enjoying it again. World of Warcraft is currently my vice (as some of you loyal readers know) but I’m super excited about some games that are supposed to be coming out this year.

  • Stargate Worlds – I’m such a Stargate nerd it  isn’t even funny. The chance to go through the gate on missions…sign me UP. Dude, I’d do it in real life you know I’m all about it in game life.
  • DC Universe Online – Quick (and true) story. The first Halloween I remember and was able to pick my own costume, I dressed up as Superman…and yeah I’m a chick. Does that tell you how deep my love is? Does it? OMG I totally cannot wait to be in that world. I can’t imagine it sucking but if it does (like the last Superman move do not even get me started) there will probably be therapy involved.
  • Star Trek Online- Really? Star Trek? OMG. I own all seasons of all the branches and completely love ST. Yes, this is the year of the geek and I am one happy little geek.

All of the above should have been read in a happy manic fast crazy girl voice, because I get way too excited about all three of those. What are you looking forward to?

Guild Wars

May 29th, 2009 0 Comments

guild-warsGuild Wars is one of the most popular MMORPGs out there right now. There are two ways to play the game, role-playing and PvP combat. My personal favorite is role-playing but then I’m a chick and most of us are more into fantasy and relationships than hacking up our fellow players. Then again….I enjoy a good hack and slash when I’m in an especially bad mood.

Like most MMORPGs there are tasks you must complete to earn certain rewards and you can cooperate with other players or with NPCs. For those who are really into the game there are tournaments where you can prove how bad you are (or good, or whatever slang you like) and win real money on down the line.

You have a 3d avatar that you walk/run/pillage with in third person (for the most part, but if you really want to get the feel of blood on your hands you can choose first person). Lots of professions, lots of options, and lots of fun.

Of course all these professions, characters, and options requires lots of memory for optimum fun. The required space is 256MB but it is recommended that you have 512MB. All of this memory comes in handy when updates are installed (which happens rather frequently). The problem with updates (not just bugs) is that it can cause your hard drive to become fragmented. Yuck. With a fragmented hard drive it takes longer for everything to work and lag time can increase in game. You do not want to be lagging when you are in the middle of a battle. Trust me. It’s bad.

Fortunately, there is a simple solution. Every time updates are issued take a little time to defrag your computer. This will guarantee that the process never takes too long (wouldn’t want to delay getting in game any more than necessary).

Do you love Guild Wars? What is your favorite MMORPG?

Lord of the Rings Online

May 29th, 2009 0 Comments

lord-of-the-ringsI completely love the world of Middle Earth. I read the books when I was in high school and totally fell in love. They were what pushed me into role playing. First it was sit down games, then I moved on to LARPs. I did throughout high school and college. Oddly enough I was the only chick at the sit down games and one of only a handful at the LARPs.

Then I found online MMORPGs. Ah, heaven. Who knew there were millions of people around the world that like to role-play? Not me, that’s for sure. I live in a very small town and was pretty much looked at like a freak (not saying I’m not a little odd, but geesh) because I liked to pretend to be someone (or thing) else every once in awhile. The first MMORPGs I found were fun and escapist but then I found my first true love in this version of gaming, Lord of the Rings. How great is that? You don’t often get a chance to rekindle your first true love, you know.

It’s a lot like other MMORPGs but it’s Lord of the Rings people. Wow. You get to be part of the magic. I’m gushing, I know. I’ll try to control myself. So the only thing I noticed that was a bit of a drawback was that occasionally the game will lag. On the boards some people suggested defragging the hard drive when this happened and I’ve found that solution works quite well. Apparently a fragmented hard drive slows down everything and can muck up fighting (I really hate getting killed because of something as mundane as a fragmented hard drive, yuck).

Were you in love with Lord of the Rings before the game? Were the books the reason you fell in love or the movies?

Everquest 2

May 29th, 2009 0 Comments

everquestAhhhh, EverCrack. Uhmm…I mean EverQuest. Really, I do. :) Despite my love for role-playing in general and MMORPGs specifically I don’t play EverQuest. You are probably wondering why this is when it is such a great game. Some might even say an addictive game. Addictive like crack. Well believe it or not there is a story. My very good friend’s husband was once addicted to EverQuest. This was while they were in college. He was premed and she was working towards a degree in business. Well they were as happy two little peas in a pod until the evil game came along. Apparently once he started playing he started slacking off on the school work and lost some of his scholarships, not a good thing. Then he started ignoring her and telling her he was too busy to do things with her because of the game, an even worse thing. One day he got all bent out of shape because their computer (they lived together and shared a computer) wasn’t running fast enough. Apparently, some of the school work she’d been doing had caused some pretty bad fragmentation and he hadn’t known about it. He then had to defrag the computer and miss out on valuable game time. Poor baby. He got grumpy and told her to make sure she defragged the machine if she did anything else, etc. This went on and on until she finally through a royal fit and told him she was leaving and if he wanted her to come back he had to drop the game. Ouch.

Needless to say he did and they are now happily married. That was when I met them, the happily married part. Well he started playing again and friction started. I was just getting back into MMORPGs and thought it might be fun to give this game a try. She found out and was distraught. I think that’s the right word. She didn’t tell me I couldn’t play but yeah, it was traumatic and there were other games to choose from. And that’s why I am EverCrack free.

Final Fantasy XI

May 29th, 2009 0 Comments

final-fantasyFinal Fantasy XI Online is a MMORPG. The important bits of information are that it is set in the world of Vana’diel and there are five races you can play. Now for the really important part. The Mithra is personally my favorite race. I know, I’m a girl and it is kind of a stereotype but…that’s why they’re stereotypes, right? Because lots of specific types of people like certain things.

Back to Mithra. The Mithra race looks like a mix between a cat and a human. (collective awwws may now commence) Back to the chick factor, the only type of Mithra character is a female. Of course that doesn’t mean guys can’t choose to create a Mithra character. Sure, they can be Mithra…but their character has to be a chick. ::evil laughter:: I love it! The prominent character traits are dexterity and agility, unfortunately they are low on charisma. Silly kitty, charisma is for Humes.

The game has been around for several years making it one of the most popular MMORPGs out there. With this popularity comes expansion packs. Because really, who wants to just sit around and enjoy being at the top of the food chain, right? I mean it is soooo much fun to fight your way to the top all over again. (a tinge of sarcasm, yes) I don’t hate expansion packs, they are good for new story lines and new items and all but geesh. Every time an expansion pack comes out, not to mention updates, I have to defrag my computer. All of the installs tend to leave it a bit fragmented and running a little slow for my taste. Of course it goes a lot quicker if I don’t wait till the updates and expansions to defrag…but who wants to waste game time, right?

What is your favorite Final Fantasy race and why? Are you a cat lover too??

Free MMORPGs

May 29th, 2009 0 Comments

mmorpgMMORPGs are just the latest way to role-play. I suppose latest is relative as the online games have been around for something like two dozen years now but still…a technological step up from the sit down games with dice and miniatures (although I still really love those).

Most of the games that get press are the ones that you have to buy and subscribe to but there are a lot of free MMORPGs out there too.

Second Life

It doesn’t make all of the lists but I think it should. It is totally about role-playing and you get to create and customize everything about the world. How great is that?

Runes of Magic

Really nice environment on par with some of the top pay to play games.

Atlantica

The environment is Earth…or the mythical places of Earth. Pretty cool concept and nice graphics.

This is only a sampling of the free MMORPGs available now. With so many to choose from there is no need to spend money on a game if you are feeling a financial crunch. If you don’t like one game you can move on to the next game on your list. The only problem with this strategy is that if you are downloading a bunch of games and then deleting as you work your way through your list to find the perfect environment, your hard drive is bound to get fragmented. If you go through a lot of games before finding your perfect match this could be a really big problem. Make sure after you uninstall a game you take the time to defrag your computer. This will ensure your computer doesn’t become too fragmented and performance isn’t diminished.

Do you have a favorite free MMORPG? Please share so I can give it a try!
